Breast cancer affects close to 280,000 women a year. Dr. Mekhail Anwar and his collaborator Dr. Catherine Park, with the help of others, are redefining the lasting results of a lumpectomy. Identifying and locating residual cancer cells, immediately after removing a tumor mass, is the key element in minimizing recurrence and limiting the need for a second surgery. With their combined backgrounds in sensor technology, biomarkers, and oncology, this team have made promising strides in developing a detection system that would allow real-time detection of residual cancer cells during breast conserving surgeries.
